Screened porch livin’ in Macon.

Macon is one Central Georgia’s most thriving cities. Macon residents enjoy the southern, small-town atmosphere and the convenience of being located just 85 miles south of bustling Atlanta. However, once you settle into all Macon has to offer, chances are you will never want to leave.

Macon’s musical roots run deep.

If you are a fan of Southern rock, the Allman Brothers’ began their musical careers here in Macon. Macon is also home to the former Capricorn Records, the music label that originally signed the band. Little Richard also has a history in Macon, the Tic Toc Room where he performed in downtown Macon is now a restaurant. At an early age, Otis Redding sang in the Vineville Baptist Church choir. And later he earned $6 by performing gospel songs for Macon radio station WIBB. Redding’s breakthrough came in 1958 on disc jockey Hamp Swain’s “The Teenage Party,” a talent contest at the local Roxy and Douglass Theatre.

On the homefront

Macon-area homeowners love the rural feel of their properties. Abundant mature trees and wildlife flourish on the large lots that are common among the area’s neighborhoods. These large lots offer the perfect setting for adding outdoor living spaces such as decks, patios, porches, or all of the above, to extend outdoor enjoyment.

Don’t forget the cherry trees!

More than 300,000 Yoshino Cherry Trees bloom in Macon for a brief time during the spring. The city is known far and wide as the cherry blossom capital of the world. From Yoshino’s to Kwanzan’s, Macon celebrates with its annual International Cherry Blossom Festival. To say the town turns pink during this time would hardly be an exaggeration. Fountains are dyed pink, houses sport pink wreaths and ribbons, cars feature pink blossoms painted in their windows, and the trees themselves put on a show. The festival includes concerts, charity events and a fair at Central City Park. The event marks, for many, the beginning of the outdoor living season and another reason to enhance the time spent outdoors!
